Why Make a Film on Teens?
Why make a film documenting the thoughts, feelings and behaviors
of kids across the world? In the U.S. alone Generation Y represents
a fifth of the population. As a demographic they’ve become
a coveted prize, target of aggressive marketing. Accordingly, they
exert a huge influence on society. Is their enormous spending power
something teens are aware of? In what other ways are they making
a difference? From protest to participation, proactive youth initiatives
are on the increase the world over.

The most culturally diverse and technology-savvy generation
yet, today’s teens may also be the most influential adolescents
in history. Do they feel the potential to enact positive change?
Historically, the teenage voice is under-represented in society’s
ongoing dialogue. Today’s teens will be tomorrow’s decision-makers:
If you’re a teen, how are societies shaping up? Is civilization
anything more than a concept? With the advent of the internet and
related technologies, this generation of teens has ready access
to more (dis)information than ever before. What does this info-culture
imply? And what about those still ‘off-line’? How teens
view the world around them and their impact upon it are focal points
for
Adolescent Sublime.
Adults have “learned” to check everything they say for
its social acceptability. Teens are less compromising. The teenager
is an alien breed. Neither fish nor fowl, they inhabit the awkward
terrain between childhood and adult maturity. As such, teens provide
invaluable insights to the human condition. As microcosm of the
human, they comprise both elements: the developing and already developed.
This, combined with their candid and unapologetic character, makes
adolescents eminently representative of humanity at large. Teens
are a reliable barometer for social climate change.
